The Storm Shadow (Scalp EG French designation) is a long range, precision, stealth, standoff, air-to-surface missile designed to destroy heavily defended fixed targets. It is a fire and forget weapon which can be fired from low to medium altitudes with a cruise missile flight profile. The Storm Shadow and the Scalp EG are exactly the same missile but with different subassemblies to be attached to French or British aircraft and secondary equipment.

The Storm Shadow guidance system consists of an Inertial Measurement Unit updated through digital terrain profile matching and GPS (Global Positioning System). This redundancy provides good navigational precision and high resistance to countermeasures. In the Terminal phase an infrared imagery homing head compares the actual scene with its preprogrammed target scene and selects the impact point to hit the target with high precision.

The Storm Shadow/Scalp EG are planned to be used on Mirage 2000, Rafale, Tornado, Harrier and Typhoon (formerly Eurofighter). It is provided with a high effective penetrator warhead, called BROACH, to counter extremely hardened targets. This missile has been selected by the armed forces of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece and the United Arab Emirates.

A total of 27 Storm Shadow missiles were fired by British aircraft during Iraqi Freedom operation (also known as Operation Telic within British armed forces) in 2003. It was the first deployment of the Storm Shadow cruise missile in a military conflict and the first time the same missile saw combat. As of December 2004, more than 600 missiles have already been delivered to end customers.

On December 3, 2004, the final validation firing of a Scalp EG/Storm Shadow missile was conducted by a Rafale M operating from Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean. The missile was released from 20,000-ft of altitude while Rafale M flying at Mach 0.8 achieving all the test objectives. That test marked Scalp EG qualified for use on the Rafale combat aircraft. As of December 2004, the UK-France long-range cruise missiles was already qualified for use on the Tornado Gr4 and Mirage 2000 aircraft.

Also Known As : NCM, Scalp Naval
Origin : France, United Kingdom
Contractor : MBDA
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : 2014
First Flight : May 28, 2010
Total Production : 250
Development Cost : EUR €910 million

The Naval Cruise Missile (NCM), also known as MdCN, Missile de Croisiere Naval or Scalp Naval, is a derivative of the Storm Shadow/Scalp EG standoff missile being developed by MBDA to meet the requirements of the French Navy for a sea-launched land attack cruise missile. This new cruise missile features a maximum range of roughly 1,000 kilometers. The next generation of French multi-mission frigates and the Barracuda-class nuclear submarines will be armed with the Scalp Naval weapon. The MdCN cruise missile was employed for the first time on April 13, 2018, during an strike campaign against Syria.

On December 29, 2006, the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) awarded MBDA a 910 million Euro contract funding the development and production of 250 Scalp Naval missiles. The French Navy will take delivery of these missiles to equip the FREMM frigates (200 missiles) and Barracuda-class nuclear submarines (50 missiles). The contract included the first production order for 50 missiles to be deployed onboard the FREMM frigates beginning in 2013. DGA will issue three additional production orders covering the remaining 200 missiles at an undisclosed date.

The Storm Shadow extended range version provides a maximum range of 560 kilometers and was developed only for use by the United Kingdom (UK) and France. It is unknown if this figure is achieved through a new engine (most likely option) or by using a lighter payload. The missile was transferred by the UK to Ukraine in 2023 and was first employed against a Russian landing ship on December 26, 2023.
